Tamias (chipmunk)

Tamias is Greek for “storer,” a reference to the animals’ habit of collecting and storing food for winter use.
The name chipmunk has been assumed to come from the American Indian “Adjidaumo” pronounced a-chit’-a-mauk.  This means “head-first” which is how squirrels descend trees (Wishner 1982).
